Keeping You Comfortable During Dental Implant Surgery
If you’re
planning to have dental implants, you may be
wondering: How will I feel during surgery?
Fortunately,
there are many ways to keep you comfortable before, during and after dental
implant surgery. The key is
expertise and careful planning, which are fundamental to every procedure.
Advances in the field of sedation dentistry mean that you can relax, knowing you will receive special care to ease any potential discomfort. This approach uses medication to put you at ease during your procedure.
WHAT KINDS OF SEDATION ARE USED FOR
DENTAL IMPLANTS?
Depending on your oral surgeon’s
evaluation and your personal preferences, you will be offered one of several
levels of sedation.
- Inhaled minimal sedation. With this
form of sedation you will breathe nitrous oxide, which is often called
“laughing gas,” combined with oxygen. The mixture is administered through
a mask and it helps you relax. Your surgeon can control the amount of
sedation you receive. The effects tend to wear off quickly. This is the
only form of sedation where you may be able to drive yourself home after
     the procedure.
- Oral sedation. Depending on the total dose given, oral
sedation can range from minimal to moderate. If minimal sedation is
chosen, you will receive sedation in pill form about an hour before the
procedure. You will feel drowsy, even though you’ll still be awake. A
larger dose may be given to produce moderate sedation.
Some people become groggy enough from
moderate oral sedation to actually fall asleep during the procedure. However,
they can usually be awakened with ease. Patients who choose minimal to moderate
oral sedation will need someone to drive them home afterward. Read
