3 Myths about Dental Implants
Did you know that dental professionals have
been restoring smiles with dental implants for more than 40 years now? Even though
implants have become the preferred way to replace missing teeth, there are
still some myths out there that create needless worry for many people.
Here’s a look at each of them – along with the
facts that can give you greater peace of mind if you’re considering having
implant surgery soon.
MYTH: DENTAL IMPLANTS ARE PAINFUL
It’s natural to feel concerned about the
discomfort that might come with any surgical procedure. But in reality, most
people come away from dental implant surgery saying, “That was much easier than
I thought!”
Dr. Geldzahler will talk with you in detail about your
situation and preferences beforehand. There are many options to assure comfort
throughout your procedure, including IV sedation, which means that you can be
asleep the entire time. As for post-operative discomfort, most patients find
that over-the-counter pain relievers are sufficient. Some may receive a
prescription pain reliever to be used for a very short time following surgery.

MYTH: DENTAL IMPLANTS COST TOO MUCH
In reality, dental implants do not cost much
more than the average 3-tooth bridge – a common alternative for tooth
replacement. What’s important to realize is that dental bridges, while a viable
option, are not a permanent solution. They must be replaced every 7 to 15
years, which means yet another expensive procedure down the road. Dental
implants, by contrast, are designed to last a lifetime – so their total
out-of-pocket cost over time may actually be lower than bridgework!
MYTH: DENTAL IMPLANTS TAKE TOO LONG
As with cost, the difference between dental
implants and bridgework may not be as significant as you might think. The
length of time needed depends on your individual situation, since there may be
several steps involved. But if you are a good candidate, you may be able to
have immediate dental implants – a procedure in which the post is implanted and
capped with a prosthetic tooth in the same day.
Even when bone grafts and other special steps
are required, the entire process usually takes about 2 to 4 months. Bridgework
may take a few weeks less, but remember – your dental implants are permanent,
so the extra time is well worth it.
